USING FORM AND COUNTERFORM
in LETTER ANATOMY

In this assignment, you will be explored the structure of letters, as well as form and counterform. You can think about form as things that are created by adding things and counterform as the things that are created by removing things.

Is this a white piece of paper on a black background?
Is it a black piece of paper with a hole cut in it?

Is this an purple piece of paper on a teal background?
Is it a teal piece of paper with a hole cut in it?

Some logos even play with form and counterform.
The spoon and talk bubble are not actually there.
They are created by subtracting form.

STEP ONE: On pinterest, find 10 interesting compositions that explore Form and Counterform

STEP TWO:
Create a 9x9" document at 300ppi.
Add a New Guide Layout
  • .25" Safe Zone
  • 3 Columns
  • 3 Rows
  • Gutter Width (you choose size, but make it the same for rows and columns)
Pick a SERIF font that is somewhat thick in its structure (it can be a bold version of a font).
Insert 1 letter into each square an explore its size. Use layer masks to contain each letter inside the squares, but "unlock" the mask when exploring size.

Your goals in this are to:
  • Try and connect the structures of each letter
  • Have a balance between the positive and negative shapes
  • Have each square be a hint to the letter's identity. Each square will be an abstract design based on the original letter.

This image is NOT a perfect example.
Which places don't connect properly from square to square?
