INSTRUCTIONS - Cartoon Drawing

You must draw a full character - head to toe.
You must add detail to your character.

You will be sketching out ideas on a larger piece of paper. You should fill your paper with cartoon designs. Your character can be a human, animal, robot or creature. Your character should be ORIGINAL, so I'm not looking for you to redraw a character that already exists or a derivative of another character (i.e. Mickey Mouse as a zombie). I'm also not looking for you to copy an illustration from google.

  • Start with basic shapes -- circles, squares, rectangles, triangles.
  • Sketch! Make your lines light and fluid
  • Combine shapes
  • Use axis lines to change the direction of a character's attention.

  • Use a photograph to help with position and movement, but don't use illustrations and copy them.

Once you feel like you have a good direction for your character, try exploring your character a few different ways:
  • Find things to exaggerate! Hair, glasses, a feature, etc.
  • Try drawing the same character only using geometric shapes
  • Try drawing the character using only circles or rounded rectangles
  • Try drawing your character with an enlarged head, or body.
  • Try drawing your character with LOTS of detail
  • Try drawing your character with simple detail.
  • Try drawing your character with a different facial expression
Again, you may use PHOTOGRAPHS as inspiration but you may not use cartoon characters or illustrations to draw from. Try not to create your in a 'gingerbread man' stance (standing straight, facing forward, hands at sides slightly away from body, legs hip-width apart with feet pointing out.)

Head shapes could be one shape (a circle; a square) or combined shapes (a circle and a square).

Don't avoid tough areas! Break them down into basic shapes. Human hands, for example, can be broken down into circles and ovals:
