INSTRUCTIONS: Menu Design

Major Concepts:
In this assignment, you will have to demonstrate:
Document Specifications:

8x10 in document at 300ppi. Set up columns (you choose how many) using guides (View>New Guide Layout).

Don't forget your margin, which is your “safe zone” at 1/4 inch from each edge. No text can pass the safe zone, but your design can.

Text Requirements:
  1. Download and open the document (in google classroom) that contains all of the text that needs to go on the menu. Select the text and copy it (Edit>Copy), then open a new text box in Photoshop and paste in the text (Edit>Paste).
  2. Format the text using size, style, font, and capitalization. Use similarity — all things that are the same type of item should look the same. I made some mistakes on purpose. Fix them according to how you think the text should be formatted.
  3. Create a ranking/hierarchy of text
  4. Use spacing or proximity to indicate relationships. Use your LEADING option in your CHARACTER panel (Window>Character) to control the space between your lines of text. Do not use "double-returns" to create space. Control your text!

Design Requirements:
  1. You must add the logo (provided on google classroom)
  2. You must design an all-vector background and other menu elements. Things you could create include borders, patterns (something repeated such as dots, lines, objects, etc.), headers, footers, ribbons, shapes, silhouettes, and vector objects (food items, designs, etc.)
  3. No photographs! Use your pen tool and vector shape tools. For example, if you were designing a dinner menu and really wanted to show a burger, then create that burger as a vector design using the pen tool.
  4. Your design should be fun! There are three pictures of the interior below. They should not be included in the menu but perhaps they will help give you a visual of the look and feel of this place. This menu should look like it belongs in this restaurant.

Frequently Asked Questions:
The following should clear up any questions you might have about text:
  • You may not delete items or words from the menu text. All of it must be included. Your job is to format the text and make the information more clear, not to determine what is being served.
  • You can use 2 or 3 different text boxes if you need it, but each line of text should not be in individual text boxes.
  • You may use more than one font in the assignment.
