Instructions: Re-creating a Master's Work

For your assignment related to the movie clips we watched yesterday.
In case you were absent, here are links to the videos:
Milton Glaser
Stefan Sagmeister
Paula Scher
David Carson
  1. Pick ONE of the above artists, perhaps the one you relate to the most or were most interested in. Perform a WEB SEARCH for that artist. Find a few POSTERS that you like or are drawn to. Do not use logos, as they will not work for this assignment.
  2. Select a poster and perform an image search for that particular poster to find a large version of that image.
  3. Open a new document at 17x11 inches at 300ppi. If you need a vertical document, alternatively, you can open a 11x17 document at 300ppi.
  4. Bring the image place the image on the left side of the document.
  5. Use your text tool to type the name of your artist under his/her poster design.
  6. Use your rectangular shape tool to create a rectangle that is the same size of your artist's poster, then move the rectangle to the right side of the document. See document set-up below:

On the right side, recreate your own version of that poster. You can use different words and different content (images), but you will need to imitate things like:
  • Composition. Composition is how the design is composed, or how the objects and visual elements in the design are placed and arranged.
  • Visual weight (Balance)
  • Color (Look for a scheme, or use similar colors as what the artist originally created.)
  • Texture (if any)
  • Text Formatting. You must mimic the FORMATTING, including the font (get as close as you can -- use DaFont.com if need be), size, style, capitalization, and color of the text, but you can change the text to say whatever you want.
  • Imagery  -- should NOT have to be identical, but rather similar in size and position.

***Remember, I am NOT looking for you to "re-vector." If you need help creating a vector, use a photograph of an object to help you.
