Instructions: Non-Photoshop Practice

What happens after you leave this class? Can graphic design only happen in Photoshop?

Absolutely not.

Photoshop does not make you a designer. It's only a tool. Therefore, if you apply design principles to other tools -- even if the tools are not as good as Photoshop -- you should still be able to design something. In this assignment, you will be practicing your skills at figuring out how to manipulate a different, non-design program.

Using Pixlr Editor, Vectr, or a combination of both, create a design for something you are an expert in.

STEP 1: Brainstorm
Start writing down anything that comes to mind for this assignment. Do you know exactly what you are an expert in?  Once you determine your topic, write down anything related to it. ANYTHING. You could end-up using some or all of this information.
For Example:
  • List of Oscar Winners
  • A How-To Demo
  • A Breakdown of you know a lot about? Science? A sport? Animals? A tv show? History? A game?
  • An upcoming or existing presentation you have from another class

STEP 2: Layout
Choose a layout from the ideas below. Do your best to mimic that layout using your own information.

STEP 3: Begin working
Consider that a single, vertical page could be 8x10 inches at 300ppi. Set up your document accordingly.
You may not use Photoshop for any part of this assignment. How can you get around this obstacle? Also, you need to troubleshoot on your own. One issue that happens in class is that you immediately look to me for assistance when you don't know how to do something. But what if I'm not around to help you? Search for you own answers within the program! Try a google search! Someone has probably had the same question at some point.
