Drawing Exercise

We are going to be doing some cartoon drawing! First, let's start with a drawing exercise to develop some characters.

Part 1: Draw a face
1. Draw the shape of a head. Add "crossed" guidelines. These will help you draw the anatomy of the face.
2. Draw the eyes. They should sit on the horizontal line of the cross
3. Draw the nose. It should sit on the vertical line of the cross.
4. Draw ears at the ends of the horizontal line. Then draw the mouth centered under the nose on the vertical line.
5. Draw hair and details
6. Draw the exact same character with different details

Part 2: Eyes
Draw 8 different pairs of eyes that use different SHAPES (big circles, connected circles, ovals, rectangles, etc.)

Part 3: Mouths
Draw 8 different mouths -- open, closed, toothy, etc.

Part 4: Expressions
Draw 8 different expressions -- you pick.

Part 5: Change it up. Draw different heads from various shapes. Use the same steps as above (using guidelines, etc.) but try some different characters with some of the expressions from part 3 (laughing old man, angry person, scared baby, etc.)
1. Round head
2. Square head
3. Egg shaped
4. Pear shaped
5. Rectangle shaped
6. Combo shaped (combine two shapes, i.e. rectangle and triangle)

Part 6: Pick Your Fav.
Let's try your favorite character face so far and try some different angles. The guidelines you draw will help you put the head in different positions.
1. Draw 6 different heads for your charter
2. Draw the guidelines at different places for all 6
3. Add in the same details (eyes, nose, etc.) for all 6 heads. Think about how things might look different based on the angle -- would you see the whole nose? Part of the nose? How much of the eyes?

Part 7: Hands
The secret to character hands is OVALS & CIRCLES
Try drawing 6 different hands using a circle for the palm and ovals for the fingers. Use your own hands as a guide. How would your hands look if you were snapping? Holding something?
